Sleep Essentials -6 Essential Oil Must Haves-

When I first started using essential oils I did so for their amazing physical benefits, I never imagined that they would offer so many emotional benefits. You see, for many years I silently suffered from severe anxious feelings and I was often left awake at night or would wake up often with these anxious or panic type feelings- to say I was beyond exhausted is an understatement.

My saving grace came when I discovered the emotional side of essential oils and my wonderful husband purchased me a book called Emotions and Essential Oils. It may be hard to believe, or seem crazy but these essential oils have been such a blessing and life changing for our whole family.

-6 Essential Oil must haves for sleep-

Lavender: I’m sure seeing this oil isn’t surprising. Lavender is well-known for its relaxing and calming properties. This oil is a wonderful way to calm the whole family by diffusing, applying topically to the bottoms of feet, making a linen spray and spritzing bedding and pillows, adding to your bath, and using a few drops in your moisturizer in place of synthetic alternatives.

Vetiver: This oil is distilled from the roots of the Vetiver plant, its aroma is sweet, woody and earthy. Be patient when dropping it out of the bottle, this oil is very thick- almost like syrup. Its known for its calming and grounding effects on emotions, and can lessen feelings of stress.

Cedarwood: This oil smells so good to me, I love the woody, nutty and earthy scents of the wood and fir oils. Cedarwood has a grounding aroma that evokes feelings of wellness and vitality and is frequently used to promote relaxation and soothe the mind and body.

Juniper Berry: This oil is one we keep in our house at all times. This oil is distilled from the berries of the plant, it has a spicy, woody yet clean aroma. It is known for its calming and grounding effects, this oil made the list because its our go-to oil for nightmares.

Serenity: Also known as the Restful Blend- Serenity includes Lavender, Cedarwood, Ho wood, Ylang Ylang, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Vetiver, Vanilla Bean Absolute, and Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oils. This blend promotes feelings of relaxation and a restful sleeping environment, as well as lessons feelings of tension, calms emotions, and soothes the senses.

Balance: Also known as the Grounding Blend- Balance includes Spruce, Ho Wood, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus flower. I use this blend multiple times a day, it promotes a whole-body sense of relaxation, helps ease anxious feelings and evokes feelings of tranquility and balance.

-How to use essential oils for sleep support-

Topically: Adding a few drops of your essential oil into your palm with a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil, or an unscented lotion) and applying to the spine, wrists and bottoms of feet. After applying the oils you can rub your hands together, cup your hands over your nose/mouth and inhale deeply for a few breaths. Alternatively you can make a roller bottle blend or use doterra’s quick and convenient touch rollers- these are pre-diluted rollers that doterra offers as single rollers or in a kit.

Aromatically: If you placed your palms over your nose and mouth to inhale the oils, then you experienced the aromatic benefits of the oils. This is a quick and easy method- especially if you don’t have a diffuser around. My favorite and preferred method is by using our diffusers, when I first started using essential oils I had 1 diffuser that I would move around the house- we now have diffusers in our main living area and in each bedroom. We all love having our own diffusers and I can select oils for each member of the family that suits their current needs, for example my toddler may just need Lavender while my older daughter needs a blend for nightmares.
